What Are Cankles?

Cankles are the enlargement of the area right above your foot. This area of the leg starts to swell so much that it makes it hard to tell the difference between the ankle and the calf. Thus, the word cankle was coined to describe this condition and combine the words ankle and calf. 

In some cases, large volumes of liquid pool into the ankle area, making it hard to distinguish between the ankle and the calf. But, other times, cankles can be the result of excess fat deposit in your ankle due to lipedema. We’ll talk more about this in the next section of the post. 

What Causes Cankles?

There are many potential causes of cankles, but we’ll go over the most common causes here:

1. Genetics

Your genetics can play a role in the development of cankles. Though genes don’t always cause this condition, they can significantly contribute to swollen ankles and can also lead to other issues that cause cankles.

For example, if someone in your family has thick ankles, it is possible that you could get them down the line. Even if you are a perfectly normal weight, your body might distribute fat in a way that causes your ankles to enlarge.

This abnormal distribution of body fat is known as lipedema. Some people get this condition from their genes and some people get it from lifestyle choices that increase their weight.

In addition, if your family is predisposed to weight gain and obesity, then you are more likely to get cankles. As weight gain can cause swelling in the ankles.

2. Diet and Lifestyle Choices

Genes can cause cankles but there are other factors that have a big impact on the shape of your ankles. In particular, your diet and lifestyle can have a huge effect on your ankles. For instance, if your diet consists of a lot of sugar and sodium, then your ankles can start to enlarge and create cankles.

Really, your diet and activity level has a big impact on your health. So, if you can get your food consumption under control and start exercising, you can improve your ankle health and create better circulation in this part of your body.

3. Pregnancy

Pregnancy can be a cause of cankles, as well. Many pregnant women undergo major hormonal changes during and after their pregnancy. These changes along with weight gain can make the ankles swell and cause cankles. In addition, the excess amount of fluid in the body during pregnancy can also create cankles.

4. Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are another common cause of cankles. Varicose veins lower circulation in the legs and create fluid leaks in this part of the body. This can result in swollen ankles.

5. Changes In Medication

Finally, if you are trying new medicine or getting off medication, you might notice swelling in your ankles. Many people retain a lot of fluid in their legs when they change what is going in and out of their body which can cause cankles.

What Do Cankles Look Like?

Cankles are often described as looking like thick cylinders. The ankle becomes so enlarged that its normal slim look is replaced by something more rounded and sausage-like in shape. This is why some people call cankles sausage legs.

How to Get Rid of Cankles?

You can get rid of cankles with several different options. If your cankles are not going away on their own and are due to hereditary causes like lipedema, then you can get liposuction and have the excess fat removed from your ankles.

If your cankles are caused by lifestyle choices and weight gain, then the best way to deal with this issue is to improve your diet and start to exercise more. This will reduce fluid retention and get your ankles back to normal.

How to Get Rid of Cankles Without Surgery?

Again, you can get rid of cankles without surgery. It just depends on how serious your cankle issue is and what is causing the development of your cankles. If you are having this problem because of weight gain, pregnancy, or other controllable factors, then we highly recommend eating a healthy diet.

You want to avoid processed foods with a lot of sugar and salt. Instead, eat more protein and foods with fiber. Leafy greens and fruits will really help your ankles! Once you have fixed your diet, try to boost your circulation with physical activity. Certain exercises can actually get rid of cankles if you are consistent enough and do them on a daily basis.

Exercises That Get Rid of Cankles

1. Seated Calf Raise

Seated calf raises are the most simple and effective way to get rid of cankles. All you have to do is sit down in a chair and lift your heels up and down so your ankles and calf get a workout. You can also use weights and place them over your legs to improve your leg strength.

2. Jumping Rope

If you want to do something that is a bit more active, then try jumping some rope. Jump rope burns a lot of calories and keeps your legs in optimal condition. This exercise is also great for full-body circulation.

3. Stair Calf Raises

Stair calf raises are a little more intensive than seated calf raises, and you get to use your body weight to increase strength and circulation in your legs. Just stand on some steps, keep your heels dangling over the edge of the step, and then push your body up and down with your feet.

4. Lunges

Finally, try out some lunges to get your ankles back in shape. You can do these on the ground with or without weights. Just take a step forward and create a ninety-degree angle with both your legs. Hold the position and then switch legs.
